The Senate

The vote is coming.
Choose someone new.

Chuck Schumer first took office in January 1981, the same month Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president. He went from the House to the Senate in 1999 and became the Senate Democrats' leader in 2017. Now that Democrats have won the Senate, he says he expects to be chosen majority leader again.

That choice is not his to make. The Democratic senators will vote, behind closed doors, and the vote has not happened yet. Every voice that reaches them before it does counts.

Nobody is saying he did not work hard. We are saying a long career is a reason to hand off, not to hang on.

Strong parties plan their succession. They bring up the next generation while the last one is still around to teach them. That is the pass of the baton, and it is overdue.

The wave

On November 3, Democrats won the Senate with at least 54 seats, and a new class of senators is headed to Washington, several of them by beating well-known incumbents. Schumer himself called it a "generational remake of the Senate map." We agree. The remake should include who leads it. News reports from November 5 and 6 say several of the newly elected Democrats have said they will not back him for majority leader.

Results are the projections of NBC News and CBS News as of November 5, 2026. Alaska and Mississippi were still too close to call. Josh Turek, who flipped Iowa, also won; no free-licence photo of him was available.

Hakeem Jeffries is not the one
to hold the Trump team accountable.

Our case: Democrats won the House, and in January the new House elects its Speaker. Hakeem Jeffries leads House Democrats and wants the job. The Speaker must be the person who stands up to the Trump administration and keeps a steady position while doing it. He dropped his support for Medicare for All, and the day after Democrats won the House he said the focus will be affordability, not impeachment. In 2025 he voted to set aside an impeachment vote. House Democrats should give their voters a real choice.

This is our opinion, and the record below is why. Every item is dated, public and linked to its source, so you can check it and decide for yourself. We have left out anything we could not confirm, and where Jeffries or his office has given a different account, we say so.

He said he was for it. Now he is not.

He is not going after the Trump administration. He is talking affordability.
